WebDAV client

A WebDAV client that is not a mounted drive you forget about

Mounting a WebDAV share on the desktop works until the network blinks and the whole file manager hangs. Tempest connects to it as an endpoint in your host list — browse it, edit files on it, and close it when you are done.

macOS, Windows, Linux, Android & iOS. Browsing and transfers are in the free plan.

Setup

A URL, a username, a password

The endpoint is whatever your server calls its WebDAV root — for Nextcloud and ownCloud that is the remote.php path, for Synology it is the port you enabled the service on.

Endpoint, username and password, with the scheme picked explicitly so https is never silently downgraded.
An option to accept a self-signed certificate, for the NAS in the cupboard with its own CA.
Works with Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology, Seafile's WebDAV mode, Apache mod_dav and anything else that speaks it. Cloud storage browser

In use

Browse, edit, and move files between endpoints

The same file browser as SFTP and S3, so the share behaves like everything else in the app.

Open a text file straight off the share in the editor and save it back.
Bookmarks for the folders you always end up in.
Keep the share in one pane and the server that consumes those files in another. Split screens

Credentials

Not stored in the OS keychain of one machine

A WebDAV password typed into a system mount lives on that machine. Here it is sealed and synced.

Zero-knowledge encrypted, available on your other desktops and on your phone. How E2EE works
Shared with a team through vaults rather than a shared account nobody can rotate.
App passwords from Nextcloud work exactly as they should, and can be revoked on the server side.

Frequently asked questions

What URL do I use for Nextcloud?
The WebDAV root your instance shows in its Files settings — normally your domain followed by the remote.php dav files path and your username. An app password is a better credential there than your account password.
Does it work with Synology DSM?
Yes. Enable the WebDAV Server package, then connect to the host and port it listens on. If the NAS uses its own certificate, turn on the option to accept it.
Is WebDAV included in the free plan?
Yes, along with SFTP, FTP and S3, on one synced device. Editing a file in place and saving bookmarks are Pro.
Why not just mount the share in Finder or Explorer?
You can, and for a share you use constantly that is fine. A mount that hangs takes the file manager with it, which is the usual reason people want a client that connects on demand instead.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes — the same endpoints and credentials sync to the Android and iOS apps.

The share, the server, and the shell in one place.
